Víkingur Ólafsson, István Várdai and the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra

Olli Mustonen | Haydn | Beethoven

MÜPA
Featuring: Víkingur Ólafsson (piano)
Featuring: Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra
Conductor: István Várdai
Concertmaster: Péter Tfirst

Program:

  • Olli Mustonen: Nonet No. 2

  • Haydn: Symphony in D major, Hob. I:93

  • Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major, Op. 73

MÜPA does not honor only Hungarian artists with the “Artist of the Season” title; it has also paid tribute to foreign musicians, as exemplified by the Russian piano virtuoso, Denis Matsuev. The criteria are clear: outstanding artistry on the one hand, and a fruitful collaboration with MÜPA on the other. Both qualities characterize 41-year-old Víkingur Ólafsson, whose profound and inspired piano playing has delighted audiences multiple times in the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall.

In May 2026, “Iceland’s Glenn Gould” (The New York Times) will perform with the world-renowned Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra—led by a former Artist of the Season, István Várdai. After Olli Mustonen’s Nonet and Haydn’s Symphony No. 93 in D major, the second half of the evening will feature Beethoven’s electrifying Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major.
